5-Day Arusha & Big Five Safari Itinerary
An exhilarating journey combining trekking, diverse wildlife viewing, and hunting for the full Big Five list.
Morning: Your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Arusha for a short drive to Arusha National Park (ANAPA). We start with a unique Walking Safari, accompanied by an armed Ranger. You will safely track Buffalos, Zebras, Giraffes, and various antelopes on foot, a truly immersive experience. Afternoon: After a picnic lunch, we switch to a game drive around the Momella Lakes, known for their flamingos (seasonal), and search for the elusive Red Colobus Monkeys. Optionally, enjoy a Canoe Safari on one of the lakes for a different perspective. We exit the park and drive towards Karatu/Ngorongoro Area.
Overnight: Lodge near Ngorongoro/Karatu | Activity: Walking Safari, Game Drive, Optional Canoeing | Travel: ~1 hr Drive to Park & ~3 hrs to Lodge
Early Descent: We start the day early with the descent into the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This natural caldera is famous for its dense concentration of wildlife, offering the best chance in Tanzania to spot the entire Big Five, including the rare Black Rhino. We spend the permitted six hours exploring the various habitats on the crater floor, focusing on the hippo pools, the forest areas where large Tuskers hide, and the open plains where lions hunt. After a comprehensive game drive and picnic lunch, we ascend the crater wall and head to the Serengeti.
Overnight: Tented Camp in Central Serengeti (Seronera) | Activity: Full Day Crater Game Drive | Travel: ~4 hrs drive to Serengeti
Full Day Game Drive: We dedicate a full day to exploring the central plains of the Serengeti, especially the Seronera Valley, known as the "Predator Capital of Africa." The Seronera River ensures a permanent water supply, attracting a high density of game year-round. We will focus our search on the iconic Kopjes (rock outcrops) where Lions and Leopards often relax, and the vast plains to find Cheetahs in pursuit of prey. This day is crucial for completing your Big Five checklist and witnessing the true magnificence of the endless plains.
Overnight: Tented Camp in Central Serengeti (Seronera) | Activity: Full Day Game Drive | Distance: Varied
Morning Game Drive: We enjoy a final, early morning game drive in the Serengeti to catch the predators before they retreat from the sun. After a hearty brunch, we begin our scenic drive back towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) and onto the lodge near Lake Manyara or Karatu. The drive itself is an opportunity for a final game viewing en route. We settle in a comfortable lodge, preparing for our final park visit tomorrow.
Overnight: Lodge near Lake Manyara/Karatu | Activity: Morning Game Drive & Transfer | Travel: ~4 hrs Drive (180 km)
Morning Safari: We conclude our safari adventure with a final game drive in the scenic Lake Manyara National Park. This park is famed for its huge concentration of Baboons and the very rare tree-climbing lions (sightings are not guaranteed but worth the search). We also explore the massive soda lake, home to thousands of pink flamingos (seasonal), and the dense groundwater forest. After the game drive and a final hot lunch, we begin the return journey to Arusha. Upon arrival, your guide will transfer you directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK) for your international departure flight.
