7-Day Great Migration Safari Itinerary
Discover the path of the Great Migration, from the Baobabs of Tarangire to the Mara River crossings.
Morning: Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Arusha town to Tarangire National Park, passing through vibrant Maasai villages and vast, open landscapes. Tarangire is often nicknamed the 'Mini-Serengeti' and is most famous for its immense herds of elephants and the iconic, ancient Baobab trees that scatter the savannah. Upon arrival, you will immediately embark on a game drive, focusing on the Tarangire River—the park's lifeblood during the dry season. Here, you will witness hundreds of animals, including buffalos, zebras, and various antelope species, congregating to drink alongside the magnificent giant tuskers.
Overnight: Lodge near/inside Tarangire | Activity: Game Drive | Travel: ~2.5 hrs (130 km)
Morning Game Drive: We start the day with an early morning game drive in Tarangire to capture the incredible views of predators on the move and witness the park's majestic elephant population at their most active hour. After a late breakfast, we embark on a long but highly rewarding drive towards the heart of the Serengeti. Afternoon Scenic Drive: The journey takes us through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA), offering spectacular views of the volcanic highlands before descending into the vast plains of the Serengeti National Park. We will have a picnic lunch en route. Upon entering the Serengeti, the game drive commences immediately, focusing on the Seronera Valley, known for its permanent water source and high concentration of big cats and plains game.
Overnight: Tented Camp in Seronera | Activity: Scenic Drive & Game Drive | Travel: ~6 hrs (300 km)
Morning Flight: We save valuable driving time by taking a scenic domestic flight from the central Seronera airstrip northwards to the remote Kogatende region. This short flight offers a spectacular bird's-eye view of the vast Serengeti plains and allows us to quickly position ourselves for the main event: the Great Migration. Upon landing in Kogatende, your dedicated northern guide and vehicle will be waiting. Afternoon Game Drive: The afternoon is dedicated to immediate game drives near the Mara River, searching for the large columns of wildebeest and zebra currently seeking safe crossing points into Kenya. This area is intensely dramatic, with crocodiles lurking beneath the surface.
Overnight: Tented Camp near Mara River | Activity: Internal Flight & Game Drive | Travel: ~1 hr Flight | Distance: N/A
Full Day Immersion: This is the day you’ve waited for! We dedicate the entire day to tracking the massive, nervous herds along the various crossing points of the Mara River. Your experienced guide will position you optimally to witness one of nature's greatest spectacles: the adrenaline-fueled Wildebeest River Crossing. While sightings are never guaranteed, the thrill of the chase, the sight of thousands of animals moving in unison, and the ever-present danger from resident crocodiles and waiting predators (lions, cheetahs, and hyenas) make this an unforgettable experience. We carry a picnic lunch to maximize our time in the field, staying until late afternoon before returning to the lodge for a well-deserved rest.
Overnight: Tented Camp near Mara River | Activity: Full Day Migration Tracking | Distance: Varied
Morning Safari: We enjoy a final, emotional morning game drive in the North Serengeti, perhaps spotting animals we missed or witnessing one last dramatic hunt. We then transfer back to the Kogatende airstrip for a flight to Seronera (Central). Afternoon Drive: From Central Serengeti, we begin our scenic drive towards the cooler Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA). The journey takes us past the massive plains, and your guide will point out key geological and historical sites like the Olduvai Gorge. We settle in at a luxurious lodge on the Ngorongoro Crater Rim, offering stunning sunset views over the crater floor, preparing for tomorrow's main event.
Overnight: Lodge on Ngorongoro Crater Rim | Activity: Game Drive & Scenic Drive | Travel: ~1 hr Flight + 3 hrs Drive (100 km)
Early Descent: After an early start, we descend 600 meters into the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater, an undisputed World Heritage Site and the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world. Often called the 'Eighth Wonder of the World,' the crater floor is a natural enclosure that hosts almost every animal species found in East Africa, making your Big Five sighting highly probable, including the rare Black Rhino. We spend the permitted six hours exploring the diverse habitats, from the open grasslands to the soda lakes and marsh areas. After a picnic lunch by the hippo pool, we ascend the crater walls and drive towards the vibrant, lush area around Lake Manyara.
Overnight: Lodge near Lake Manyara/Karatu | Activity: Full Day Crater Game Drive | Travel: ~1.5 hrs Drive (80 km)
Morning Safari: We conclude our safari adventure with a game drive in the scenic Lake Manyara National Park. Known for its incredible variety of landscapes, the park features a massive soda lake, dense acacia woodlands, and groundwater forests. We specifically search for the famous tree-climbing lions and the spectacular sight of thousands of pink flamingos along the lake shore (seasonal). After the morning game drive and a final hot lunch, we begin the return journey to Arusha. Upon arrival, your guide will transfer you directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK) for your international departure flight, carrying memories of an unparalleled Tanzanian safari.
